North Korea: The Hermit Kingdom

When we think of fascism, tyranny, and dictatorship, what’s the first thing that usually comes to our mind? Most people would say Adolf Hitler, the Nazis, Joseph Stalin or the Soviet Union. All of these are true but they no longer exist today. We would think we live in a much better world after World War 2 but there is one country above all else that exists in our world but is separated from it thanks to the family who has been ruling it since its foundation.

North Korea has been called the Hermit Kingdom by many because it isolates itself from the rest of the world. The Kim dynasty restricts all information and travel to and from the country out of fear and intimidation, mostly because of the size of its military, which ranked among the top 5 countries in the world.

The people of North Korea have been completely brainwashed by the state controlled media for as long as the country has remained in existence since Korea had been split in two after the Korean War. When the Soviet Union decided to invade Korea, the United States felt they had to stop them to prevent the spread of communism. The U.S. defended the South while Stalin used his army to defend the North.

During the Korean War both sides kept pushing each other back until finally a ceasefire was signed creating the 38th parallel between the two countries. Although this ended the fighting, to this day both North Korea and South Korea are still technically considered to be at war with each other. South Korea eventually became a capitalist country while North Korea eventually fell into financial despair becoming a communist state after the fall of the Soviet Union.

North Korea is ruled by 3 generations of the same family called the Kims. It began with Kim-Il-Sung who came into power after the end of the Japanese rule in 1945. Thanks to Joseph Stalin, who taught Sung about communism, North Korea became a communist state having close political and economic relations with the Soviet Union. Before the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, North Korea’s economy remained strong while South Korea’s economy remained weak. After the collapse South Korea quickly surpassed North Korea becoming one of the largest capitalist countries in the world.

To this day the North Korean government teaches its people from a very young age to hate the United States after it was decided to divide the country into two. Why? Kim-Il-Sung, with the backing of Joseph Stalin, wanted to rule the whole country of Korea. Through Stalin’s teachings, Kim-Il-Sung created the ideology of Juche which postulates that “man is the master of his destiny” and that creating self-reliance in a country can achieve true socialism. This would explain why, today, the country refuses to accept any kind of economic help from the rest of the world. It is also why the country remains self-isolated. The Great Famine of the 1990s is a good example of why isolating yourself from the outside world is not a good idea unless your country has all the resources it needs to sustain itself indefinitely.

The people of North Korea have become indoctrinated through Juche to worship the Kim family as if they were Gods. And without the Kims, all North Korean people would be starving in the streets without homes to live in or places to work. Of course, this is happening today all over the country because the government cannot sustain itself any longer without outside help.

Today, thanks to many North Korean defectors, both civilian and military soldiers, we have a better understanding of what truly goes on inside the Hermit Kingdom and what goes on inside the minds of all those who have been brainwashed by their government and media propaganda. Anyone who questions or opposes the ruling of the Kim dynasty is either executed or sent to one of the many concentration camps built in various locations around the country. Because of this, it is unclear whether most citizens truly believe what they are being told or have no choice but to obey out of fear of death or imprisonment. Most probably wish to rebel but fear to do so because of the size of their military.

So how do three generations of the same family manage to stay in power for over 70 years? Well, first it is through indoctrination of the state run media and government. And the second is through controlled elections. If you don’t vote for Kim in power you’ll either be sent to one of the many concentration camps or find yourself in front of a firing squad along with everyone else who felt like voting for someone who could change the country for the betterment of everyone.
